Spud stared out at stars along the horizon and then down at his trembling hands

holding the remains of a tortured sandwich.

"Damn all wars forever," he said quietly.

Tears and sweat were running down his face.

Vaguely in the distance behind him and just over the bedroom voice of the DJ, he could hear

the drone of a twin-engine plane.
